A marine shore hand is an entry level position in the commercial
shipping industry, the work they do ensures the optimal operations and
safety of ships arriving and departing at ports. A shore hand is known
by various names around the world; rope handlers, berthing gangs or
mooring teams as they are known in SA. No matter what we call them they
provide muscle and expertise with mooring ropes, securing them to the
fore and aft of the ship and attaching them to fixed posts on the quay
known as bollards. Each job, either mooring an arriving vessel or
assisting in the sailing process takes about one and a half hours and
each team will do this between five to six times per shift.. You need to
be keen on outdoor work in all weather and be physically fit and ready
to get down to some hard work for this position.
