Despite popular belief, older people are at risk of HIV and the rate of
infection amongst the elderly has been on the rise. Yet, public
awareness programmes are seldom targeted at the elderly and routine
medical checks on the elderly are not often considered. It also doesn’t
help that many of the early symptoms of HIV such as night sweats,
chronic fatigue, weight loss, dementia and swollen lymph nodes mimic the
natural aging process. Malibongwe Sidula talks to us about how he copes
with the virus in his senior years. We speak to Everlyn Chelwane who,
despite the fact that her children and a grandchild are infected keeps
going and social activist Maria Khambule gives insights into how the
