Episode 14 – 30 April 2011 - Forest Town School
Forest Town School, established in 1948 was the first in the country for children with disabilities. At that time it catered for children with cerebral palsy. Today the school caters for approximately 350 learners between the ages of three and 18. The majority of learners come from low income, high density areas in a 60km radius around Greater Jo’burg. Over the years, the school expanded and now caters for a wide range of disabilities. The school is renowned for innovative and pioneering education models, some of which are utilised world-wide. A dedicated team of 80 professional and non-professional staff, the school governing body and the Board of Trustees, provide the highest standard of service and accountability. Services at the school have in the last 20 years branched out far beyond the aspect of just being a school. Always responsive to the continuing lack of resources for the disabled community, the school has developed programmes aimed at providing essential skills for youth with disabilities to enter the workplace.
