Responses from Shift Editor

“I want to share a big concern with you. Over the last two months Shift (on SABC1 Mondays to Wednesdays at 13h30) has broadcast two episodes about Iwhoonga, also known as the drug Nyaope. The first episode highlighted how serious the drug is and how it’s sweeping across the country, breaking homes and killing the human spirit, especially of children and youth. The tactics the children and youth use, such as stealing to get their fix is shocking.”

“The second episode was about rehabilitation and how families can support one another and get help. A message voiced loud and clear on the show was that parents need to spend more time with children and youth and teach them that pressure from their friends is not a command to take part in taking drugs. Another concern is there are not many rehabilitation centres in the country.”

“Both episodes received large support on facebook, calls, ivr, sms and audience share. This means the public needs more information. This is a serious problem and we need to take action. We must encourage our youth to have dreams and believe in themselves. They must know how to say no to peer pressure and drugs. Here are some contact details that will help us play a bigger part in helping one another.”
