Episode 17 – Nail technician
04/06/2013
Nails have become a major trendsetting accessory, not just for
high-fashion consumers but for the average woman who wants to make an
impression as well. This is a temporary and inexpensive way to enhance or
change your look regularly and a way to stay at the forefront of fashion trends
without breaking the bank…and it is big business all around the world.
The
interest in having statement nails has boosted the salon and professional nail
tech industry, who have embraced new techniques dedicated to making nail art
safer and longer-lasting, and new products and techniques appear every season.
If you are interested in beauty and fashion, this job could be perfect for you.
To become a nail technician, you will need to have creativity and
patience, and an organised approach to your daily routine. As a nail
technician you need to be able to apply and decorate false nails and nail
extensions, but also consult on the general health and wellbeing of the
client's hands and feet. Customer service and 'people' skills are important,
enabling you to talk to customers and find out what type of nail treatment they
want. Being a nail technician strikes a nice balance between science and art,
as there are routines and techniques that you must master in order to become
proficient at nail application, no matter what type of nail is used. However,
when you do personalised designs on people’s nails, it gives you space to use
your own imagination to create unique designs, colours and finishes.
You can train at FET colleges and with private training providers. Some
training service providers may expect you to have completed a course in
manicure before you move on to advanced nail techniques, while other employers
will train you while you work. You'll need to keep up to date with the latest
fashion trends including new products and techniques by doing short courses run
by manufacturers of nail products, or your trainer or employer may be able to
give you information about these courses. But if you are good with people,
patient, organised and have that creative urge then embellishing nails with
creative colour and amazing art could be the career you’ve been looking for.
Join Irene Mabirimisa age 33 who is willing to make dream come true.
