Welding on iSpani - SABC1 @13h30 on 15 August

Welding is a career where a person works closely with steels and light metals. These come in all shapes and sizes; some are used for the building of bicycles and aeroplanes. Welders have the duty of securing metals together to create sturdy, safe, strong structures. Welding is an intricate job which requires utmost attention and focus at all times.

There are many methods of welding and each method has different precautions to adhere to. Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) uses an electric current to weld and Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) uses a constant wire feed as an electrode. iSpani is a reality documentary that takes viewers into the world of work.

Each week an aspiring careerist is exposed, in detail, to the inner workings of a specific career starting at the very bottom.
They are taken on a process of orientation and practical job shadowing, introduced to and supported by potential employers.

In addition to performing specific tasks that build the foundation of a competent employee, iSpani candidates are coached by on-the-ground experts in the field, who share their experiences in developing their own careers with the candidates.
