Masello
says “When I was invited to audition for Democrazy I grabbed the opportunity
because I liked the idea of both presenting and comedy. I love creating and
performing characters; Democrazy is a chance to show the country that side of me”.
Masello is a diverse artist who works in various mediums
including television, theatre, film, street performance and live music. Her experience ranges from acting, singing,
poetry, storytelling and intervention satire. She is known for her acting and
presenting on television and recently for her lead role in the film A Million Colours.
Masello
knew from a little girl that she wanted to be a performing artist. Her parents were artists and activists so she
grew up at rallies and theatres. She
began performing before she went to school in her dad’s cultural group and
recited poems at many political gatherings.
Masello’s television credits include the Emmy nominated series Home Affairs, the multi award winning
soapie Isidingo, Justice for All, One, Yizo Yizo 3 and Artchaar. She was also part
of an international ensemble cast of Rough
which won nine Canadian Emmys for best
mini series.
Her
career highlights, she says include “the
opening for Sibongile Khumalo at the launch of the Eskia Mphahlele foundation.
It was an honour to recite for the late Professor Eskia Mphahlele and recently,
singing with the Thathi’Cover Okestra and the Afro Galactic Dream Factory”.
She hopes
Democrazy, starting on SABC2 Sunday 20 January at 21h00 for
four weeks will get ordinary South Africans talking and taking their power
seriously. Democrazy illustrates
the many ways people can make their voices heard; from stand-up comedy to
formal lekgotlas.
