They discover that men are more prone to fight each other because they have evolved to compete for things like status, material wealth and often even women!
Scientists are developing new technologies to be used in war all the time, like cyborg moths with chips implanted into their body tissue to be used as little flying spies! Thami and Dee explain the science behind Radar and how it uses echo and the “doppler shift”, when sound is created by or reflected off of a moving object, to detect an object or target. Dee chats to Ray from the CSIR to learn more about the technologies they are developing to better protect South Africa’s soldiers, because, “As the weapons technology improves, we have to improve our protection capability.”
There are lots of technologies that we use today that were made during war times. Nuclear power plants for example, use the science of nuclear fission to release great amounts of energy and produce electricity. Thami and Dee explain how Radar led to the invention of microwaves! Even the Internet began as a military project! Thami visits Battlezone where he learns about the strategies used in war, like Camouflage, Concealment and Decoy, all while playing an action-packed game of paintball – military style!
Come practice The Art of War with Thami and Dee on TOMz this Monday 29 October at 17h00 on SABC 1.
Fuelled by the Department of Science and Technology and produced for SABC Education by I Love That productions, Teenagers on a Mission (TOMz) is a funky, creative and innovative exploration of how 'everyday' science and technology has shaped our society. TOMZ was introduced to South African audiences in 2010, and by presenting in an array of South Africa’s vernacular languages, it has achieved its goal of exposing career paths for the youth of today to create a skilled and educated South Africa.
