Cheering Madiba As He Turns 93 Years

In partnership with the Department of Basic Education, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and LeadSA the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will join hands with fellow South African (SA) citizens in singing a ‘Happy Birthday’ song to the “Father of SA Democracy”, Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on Monday, the 18th of July 2011 at 08h05.

In honour of this iconic man, the SABC and its partners is aiming to achieve history that will be written in the Guinness Book of Records for having had the most people singing a birthday song to an individual, all at the same time.

The SABC coordinator of this initiative, Pontsho Makhetha says “all schools around the country will sing the National Anthem at 08h00 on this special day, and that at 08h05 they will join the country in singing the Happy Birthday song for him. The partnership has requested participation from other broadcasting mediums and this request seems to have been well received as these mediums hope to get a positive response from the public and other stakeholders.”

The Buhlebemfundo High School choir, at Tsakani, Ekurhuleni, in Gauteng has been given the “rights” to sing for Madiba on his birthday. The choir will be on Morning Live and Shift on SABC 1, and 18 SABC radio stations that will get the country singing at the same time on Monday, the 18th July 2011. Chatroom, Gospel Gold and Spirit Sundae will also celebrate Madiba’s birthday over the weekend. Motswako will celebrate on Monday, 18th July.

On the other hand, President Jacob Zuma, will be in Limpopo on the 18th of July at 08h00 at a certain school where he will be recorded singing the National Anthem and the Happy Birthday song for Mandela. It has been suggested that he may sing ‘his own’ song for Madiba which will be filmed for Morning Live.

The Happy birthday song will be broadcasted intermittently on all SABC radio stations and television channels. Interviews will be conducted with the spokespersons for the Department of Basic Education and the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund on matters relating to the “SING FOR MANDELA” initiative Mr. Panyaza Lesufi will represent the Department of Basic Education, Mr. Sello Hatang is the spokesperson for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, and Mr. Mohlolo Lephaka GM in the office of the SABC GE Stakeholder Manager, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, will represent the SABC.

”Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure… it is not our darkness, but our light that most frightens us. So, as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others,” This quote often gets attributed to Nelson Mandela, but written by Marianne Williamson.

Viva Madiba Day Viva…
