A Little About ‘The Right To Win’ Presenter Aubrey Poo

Aubrey Poo is no stranger to the arts. He has performed in many television shows, theatre productions, films and commercials. Aubrey says The Right To Win coming up on Saturdays on SABC2 at 12h30 from 7th May will “create awareness of constitutional rights for people who don't have access to information. This is done in a fun and exciting way that challenges contestants and viewers at home to use their thinking caps”.

Born in Pretoria , Aubrey matriculated at Pro Arte in Alphen Park, he was never keen on academics because of his passion for drama. After school he attended Pretoria Technikon, now known at Tshwane University of Technology. When he was younger he wanted to become a lawyer or doctor and at some time work with his mother who is admired in the education field.

Aubrey is an only child raised by a single mother most his life, he says he never wanted for anything and grew up with strong family values. His career has been one big highlight; he says “So far I’ve done almost everything I’ve wanted to do by working on stage, television and film. I have won and been nominated for awards. The last ten years don’t feel like I’ve worked because I love what I do”.

Aubrey values his privacy; he has a three-year-old daughter who is full of life, funny in personality and opinion. In his leisure time he plays golf, listens to music and enjoys reading biographies of people he admires. Denzel Washington and Sophie Okonedo are Aubrey’s favourite movie stars. The most memorable song in his life is Sankomota’s ‘Now or Never’; he enjoys listening to Lira and Adele. He station hops between radio stations Metro, Khaya and Talk Radio 702, his favourite TV show is Frasier.

Assumption, classicism, bigotry and racism make Aubrey angry. Procrastination is something he doesn’t like about himself and is scared of failure. He is a versatile and strong singer. His definition of hell is Johannesburg traffic and irate drivers. Life’s truths, pain or beauty can make him cry. His unfulfilled ambition is to direct and produce theatre on a big commercial scale.

If granted three wishes Aubrey would ask for life, love and good health. His next big project will be working with his mentor James Ngcobo. Watch Aubrey on The Right To Win starting on SABC2 on Saturday 7th May from 12h30 to 13h00 for 13 weeks. The Right To Win is produced by Kagiso TV and Communications & Endemol SA for SABC Education and the Independent Electoral Commission’s civic and democracy education campaign.
