22-year old Johan du Pisanie from Vryburg is one of six contestants on SABC Education’s programme One Day Leader. He obtained his M.Sc Data Mining qualification at the North-West University. Johan’s dream for South Africa is that we embrace and respect each other’s differences.
One Day Leader focuses on leadership skills; a television series where South African’s can watch contestants show why they should be the final winner in the series. The winner will receive the opportunity to effect change and gain experience in positions of leadership as an internship in the offices of the chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency and the Presidency. The six contestants will battle it out on SABC1, Tuesdays at 6.30pm from 15 February 2011.
“I want to help South Africans realise that they need to become who they were meant to be. One of my greatest passions in life is to help people understand that they don't need to be anyone but themselves. Each person was created in a way that, if they would just be themselves, they would impact on the people around them in a way that would benefit our people and our country. Everyone has a dream, but unfortunately for whatever reason, we sometimes decide that it is not possible and give up on these dreams. No dream should ever be given up! In South Africa, every dream has the possibility to change a nation. My purpose in life is to help people realise these dreams and by doing that, contribute to a greater future for South Africa” says Johan.
On his vision as a leader he says “embrace and respect your difference! Since the start of democracy in South Africa we have thought we should disregard the fact that we are all different, because in essence we are the same. This is true and false at the same time. Yes, we are all South Africans. Yes, we live in the greatest country on earth. Yes, we share a common set of problems. But No, we are not all the same. We don't all speak the same language. We don't all look the same. We have different needs and wants and we sing different songs! Contrary to popular belief, this is good. If we were all the same, we would not grow. But we are all different. My dream for South Africa is that we embrace and respect these differences. Every South African must know their heritage and culture. Every South African must be prepared to stand up for what they believe in. If we do this, we as a country will grow. Every South African must realise that we are different, we come from different backgrounds and we must be able to respect whatever culture our fellow South African belongs to. If we respect one another we will not devour one another in the quest for belonging here. The truth is we belong in South Africa and we can all be who we are.”
