Anybody can be a teacher- Mother of All Professions

On Tuesday 22nd February at 11am SABC Education brings you season three of Mother of all Professions on SABC2.

The new series of 52 episodes is a docu-magazine type programme and is different from the previous two series which focused on educators. Series three takes a global view on the nobility of teaching.

Mother of all Professions 3 shares inspiring stories, success stories of mentors, trainers, teachers and role models who are giving back to society. The message is ‘anybody can be a teacher’.

Dorah Mbokazi (Teaching Life Skills through Dance). Sis’ Dora is a community dance worker and founder of Dorah’s Dancers, a group she established in 1994 in Soweto Meadowlands zone 10. Equipped with little more than passion for movement education, she embraced her inner self and began this group because she wanted to keep young kids off the streets. Through the years, Dorah has produced professional dancers and a few music artists. She works hand in hand with other experienced and well known people in the dusty streets of Ndofaya.

Fari Frederick Rufetu (Striving for Education against All Odds). Fari Frederick Rufetu had humble beginnings. Born into a family of nine siblings, he started herding cattle and goats at the age of four, he never went to crèche and never had shoes until he went to high school, in standard 6 (grade eight). He married a domestic worker (kitchen girl), and against all odds, he and his wife, are both Masters students. Frederick is a Fulbright Scholar. He has been involved with education for thirty years and still finds it exciting to teach. During the Fifa 2010 World Cup he was invited by his former school in Manhattan, New York, to attend a graduation because all the students he taught passed and the school obtained a hundred percent pass rate, a first in the history of the school.

Pumla Mabilo (Fighting for the Right to Educate an African Child). Mrs. Pumla Mabilo was a science teacher at the Winnie Ngwekazi primary school for eleven years. Her husband sponsored her education until she became a teacher and later principal of the school in 1997. Taking charge at the school wasn’t easy for Pumla, the school had many challenges. With the coming together of teachers and Pumla allowing suggestions from her staff, things started to happen. The school was established in 1956 in Pimville, Soweto, by educational activist, Mrs. Winnie Ngwekazi who started the school to care for children who were turned away by other schools. Today Pumla is tasked with the responsibility of continuing Mama Winnie’s legacy of striving for the right to educate an African child.

Paul Grobler (Teaching Children about God, the Creation, Themselves & Others). Paul Grobler, a lecturer in the IT sector by training was called into full-time ministry after training in the corporate and college environment for six years. Paul followed his heart and went into full-time ministry during 2004. He is still involved in training and lectures part-time in the corporate sector. Paul is a participant on a computer talk show on RSG and is involved with children and youth ministries at his local church. He assists the church, school and youth group communities to live life and reach their full potential. He encourages them to grow spiritually, socially, and physically through the use of experiential education principles in a safe, stimulating and adventurous setting.

Pastor Lebo Pule (combining ministry and education). Pastor Lebo Pule is a qualified auditor and accountant. He left his lucrative job to join the ministry. Upon joining, he unleashed his full potential of being an educator, through preaching in his community. His not so great upbringing did not hinder him from answering his calling and being the best that he is today.

Maureen Mothibe (retired teacher reviving past skills to assist present day learners). 62 year old Mrs Mothibe was called back to the classroom because of her exceptional teaching skills. Present day learners have the privilege of benefiting from her knowledge and wisdom. Going back to the classroom was not an issue for her because teaching is her first love.

Jackie Gallagher (helping the underprivileged achieve their goals). Jackie Gallagher is the founder and general manager of the Sparrow Schools Educational Trust. Twenty years ago Jackie placed a small newspaper advertisement that resulted in her teaching four learners every Saturday in a church hall in Joubert Park, Johannesburg. Today her initiative has grown into a well-respected educational organisation that has helped thousands of children prejudiced by the educational policies of the apartheid government to better their education and skills for a brighter future. Today, Sparrow Schools and Educational Trust, two interconnected projects cater for around 600 children and youth from impoverished communities, employing 82 staff members at the Foundation School in Melville and the Sparrow Combined Vocational Training Centre in Sophiatown.

Mavis Mohlolo (Having a spirit of perseverance and encouragement). Mavis Mohlolo comes from humble beginnings. She did her schooling in the Eastern Cape where she was born. Upon completing matric she came to Johannesburg to look for opportunities to further her studies, but unfortunately her father lost his job back at home and that’s when her dream of getting a further education was shattered. She was unemployed sitting at home when she heard of Siyakhula. When she arrived at Siyakhula she didn’t know how to use a computer, now she is the trainer and manager of Siyakhula Computer School, training over 600 students a year on her courses by providing low-cost high quality training. Today her students are at top IT companies around SA including Vodacom, HP, LGIT Smart Solutions, etc.

SABC2 11am - 19 April 2011
Sharanjeet Shan (Maths, science and Technology projects along with entrepreneurship education). Due to various reasons, Sharanjeet’s education was interrupted but she managed to rise above the obstacles and achieve high levels in education. Her passion for maths and science helped her travel the world championing the cause of children’s education and learning.
