The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and the Department of Education (DoE) have entered into a one year partnership, which allows SABC Education free broadcast rights to screen Study Mate a programme geared towards Grade 12 Learners, on SABC1, which began broadcast on 01 June 2009.

The new agreement has seen the Study Mate time slot moved to 14:00- 15:00 from its previous time slot of 10:00-11:00. This timeslot move will provide learners with additional tutorial and supporting material for their respective classes after having attended their formal schooling.

An additional slot of Study Mate from 05:00- 06:00 has been included for learners to get a head start for the classroom.

Simon Molaudzi, General Manager, SABC Education said “As SABC Education we have a noble mandate of educating the nation, both formally and informally. Study Mate therefore lands itself well to our mandate, as it brings additional lessons and revision largely to matriculants to ensure that the pass rate is vastly improved.

The Study Mate programme is modeled around tackling past exam question papers, with learners taken through all questions, being given tips on how to handle/ deal with questions in the exam set-up. This brings access to learners of best assembled teachers, subject advisers and examiners, who either present the programme, inform the content and/or provide subject expertise equal to none”.

The number of subjects also covered in the programme has increased from previous similar programmes, including amongst others Maths and Maths Literacy, Afrikaans, English, Science and Economic subjects. The challenge around Maths as a subject is largely mitigated by expert presentation of handling exam questions. Indeed both learners and educators can vastly benefit from this programme. The DoE has also committed itself to ensuring that they will encourage learners to watch this programme after school.

“As a television channel catering mainly for the interests of the youth of Mzansi, SABC1 took the decision to move Study Mate timeslot from 10h00 to 14h00. Our aim is to ensure maximum access for Matriculants to this important study material. We are confident that this intervention will greatly improve their chances of doing better in their final exams,” says Vukile Madlala, SABC 1’s Publicity Manager.

Study Mate has already started to deliver positive results as it currently dominates the 05h00 -06h00 timeslot with a 27.5% share, which translate to 162 218 television viewers. This is well above the slot target of 18%. At 14h00-15h00 the show is delivering 15.2% share – equivalent to 579 350 viewers and, is chasing the slot target of 22%.
