What is a Tug Master? Is this career for you?

Watch iSpani, SABC1 Wednesday 17th October @ 13h30.
This episode of iSpani takes a look at what it takes to be a tug master especially if you are a female. Tug Masters operate tug boats in order to assist with the berthing and un-berthing of large vessels. Tug boats are very powerful, so operating one requires a high level of skill and a thorough knowledge of the port environment in which they are operating.
Tug Masters works closely with port authorities, ship masters and marine pilots to ensure that vessels moving in and out of ports do so safely and efficiently. Tug Masters generally meet a ship out at sea, attach a line and help to guide it into berth. There are two Tug Master training programmes stretched over a year. There are two theory phases and the balance of the programme is practical understudying at the port on the type of tug boat to be qualified on.
iSpani is a reality documentary that takes viewers into the world of work. Each week an aspiring careerist is exposed, in detail, to the inner workings of a specific career starting at the very bottom. They are taken on a process of orientation and practical job shadowing, introduced to and supported by potential employers. In addition to performing specific tasks that build the foundation of a competent employee, iSpani candidates are coached by on-the-ground experts in the field, who share their experiences in developing their own careers with the candidates.
