Women of the SABC Celebrated

By Sanelisiwe Guwa- SABC. The women of the SABC gathered at the M1 studios on 8 August to take part in the Women's day event, which was a lavish ceremony intended to uplift, empower and thank them for being the superstars that they are. "I am a confident woman, I am SABC". This has been the theme in which women of the SABC come together to celebrate Women's Day.
SABC GCEO, Lulama Mokhobo spoke at the event, after being introduced by the CFO Gugu Duda. Ms. Mokhobo spoke of a story taken from the Bible about Esther, courageous woman who put her life on the line, for the people of Israel. She reiterated that women have so much power; they can bring joy and pain, they possess power to change the cause of any decision, to build, reconstruct, to create and to co-create. She concluded her by leaving the woman with something to ponder about themselves saying, "The purity of a thought determines the outcome of that particular situation."
Guest speaker Tiamara Williams, a humanitarian, TV host and personal coach, spoke about the opportunity of recreating ourselves a new everyday to reach unlimited possibilities. "Fake it till you make it". Her parting words were that women shouldn't be afraid of their own greatness, and no matter the obstacle, it presents the chance to be a strong and confident woman. The post democratic elections’ rise and progress of women within the SABC was mentioned to illustrate the strides the organisations has taken in addressing gender equality:
  • In 1994, the SABC saw its first female Chair the Board;
  • In 1996 there were two women in Top Management;
  • In 2004, employment equity was made a priority for women in the SABC;
  • In 2008 and 2009 SABC chairperson and deputy chairperson were female;
  • In 2010/11, saw a significant growth of women in top positions; and
  • 2012 the SABC saw its first female GCEO
Female employees of the SABC, Millicent and Nomawethu Jantjies, shared their life experiences and how they overcame workplace and social challenges and how those have made them to be the strong women they are today.

Women were treated to fun activities that kept them interacting in the event with lucky draws and hampers being given to lucky women.
