Become a Television Star, and make a difference – Intersexions wants You!

Multiple award-winning SABC1 drama Intersexions has been one of South Africa’s most popular television series ever – and now is your opportunity to be a part of Intersexions II. Quizzical Pictures, which co-produced Intersexions with Ants Multimedia, is to stage auditions for members of the public to win roles in the much-anticipated second series, which is currently in pre-production. The first audition takes place in Johannesburg on 4 August.
“We’re very excited about the development of Intersexions II, and we know from ongoing viewer feedback that many, many South Africans are as well,” says Phuthi Moloto, SABC1’s portfolio manager for the drama genre.
“By offering members of the public the opportunity to play a part in the series, we are taking the notion of audience engagement to a whole new level.
At the same time, we are entrenching the gritty realism and authenticity of the first series, which truly captured viewers’ hearts and spurred them to share Intersexions with their personal networks,” says Sara Chitambo, of Johns Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa (JHHESA), the health communications NGO that conceptualised the series.
Intersexions I consisted of 25 standalone episodes, each linked by a character, which portrayed how HIV moves through the human sexual network. A 26th episode took the form of a documentary that explained how HIV spread throughout the 25 stories – from the point of view of the virus itself.
Intersexions I immediately grabbed audiences’ attention, and within three weeks of first being aired in late 2010 it became South Africa’s second-most popular television show across all genres. Viewers actively engaged with the series on social media, frequently sending more than 2 500 tweets per episode – while they were being screened.
The first series garnered local and international acclaim. It won an unprecedented 13 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) earlier this year, as well as a Peabody Award – the leading global broadcast accolade.
The first round of auditions for Intersexions II takes place in Johannesburg on 4 August, at the Bassline club at 10 Henry Nxumalo Street, in Newtown. People wishing to audition should prepare one of four roles, which can be accessed on www.facebook.com/intersexions, and they may audition in any of the country’s official languages.
Cast members from Intersexions I, including Thato Molamo and Noxee Maqashalala, will be on hand to give prospective TV stars audition tips, and share what playing in the first series has done for their acting careers. The crowd will be entertained by a round-up of top DJs.
In addition to the entertainment, audiences will have the opportunity to take advantage of HIV counselling and testing services, screening for diabetes and other free health services that will be made available by the Gauteng Department of Health and NGOs.
“Why wait for Intersexions II to be screened, when you can be a part of the action yourself? This is your opportunity to play a role in one of the most popular series this country has ever seen – and use your acting skills to make a difference in the struggle against HIV/AIDS,” says Chitambo.
