Gideon Lovinga plays Open Varsity’s ‘Chippy’

Gideon Lovinga plays the character of Chippy in Open Varsity, a television show that brings university lessons into the comfort of homes.

In addressing the non-academic challenges that most 1st and 2nd year students face, Open Varsity created the character Chippy especially for aspiring students intending to register with institutions of higher learning who will learn from Chippy who is forever struggling to balance his studies and adjust to university life. Chippy finds solutions or helpful pieces of advice for students.

Gideon acted in Generations, Home Affairs, Justice for All and Muvhango. You can watch him again in Open Varsity scheduled for broadcast on SABC2 Mondays at 23h45 and Tuesdays to Thursdays at 23h00 commencing 21st March.

Open Varsity offers lessons in arts, law, commerce, engineering, natural sciences, physics, financial accounting, commercial law, physiology and constitutional law 100 faculties. Students, not enrolled in any faculty will also benefit from Open Varsity which offers solutions to many of the non-academic challenges faced by students during their studies. Open Varsity revises lessons that students struggle with in various courses. Through recapping on lessons, the show creates a better link between the lesson and the real-life application of the study.

Open Varsity educates and supplements university students’ specific course content and provides extra study material in line with the needs of the course in the degree of their choice. The show will guide students through non-academic challenges such as study methods, time management and any cultural shock they may face.

Open Varsity’s presenter- Vusiwe Ngcobo at the helm of television screen

Vusiwe Ngcobo, presenter on Open Varsity is no stranger to television screens. She is the presenter of Yo-TV and Harambe. Born on 26 September 1988 in Johannesburg Vusiwe grew up in a musical family. Her parents are successful South African musicians. ‘Ihashi Elimhlophe’ meaning ‘White Horse’, is her father’s stage name and her mother performs as ‘Ebony’. Ihashi Elimhlophe is one of the best Maskandi musicians in South Africa. In 1998, Vusiwe and her siblings formed the group Amaponi (baby horses).

The Amaponi released their first album in 1998 and have released five other albums since.
Vusiwe is an accomplished musician, television presenter, live performance artist and has plans to increase her portfolio into acting.

She is a responsible young woman that has her destiny in her hands and excels in all that she does. She is part of the ‘Love life CBL team’, a group of celebrities that travel South Africa talking to young people about HIV and AIDS, this is charity work done free.

Tsiko Productions produce Open Varsity for SABC Education for broadcast on SABC2

Open Varsity’s presenter Amukelani N’wankot

Open Varsity presenter Amukelani N’wankoti, better known as Mchangani first cut his broadcast teeth on an educational show Tech Expo, an insert in X marks the Spot. He is a radio presenter on Munghana Lonene fm.

Mchangani, well-known for hip hop sounds released an album in 2007 called So Shangaan. In 2008 he was presenter of another educational programme Vutshila.

Mchangani brings his radio and music fans to SABC Education’s programme Open Varsity which brings university lessons into the comfort of homes. Student cards and enrolment forms are not necessary; all that is required is for students to tune into SABC2 every Monday to Thursday.

Open Varsity scheduled for broadcast on SABC2 from 21 March 2011 brings university lessons into the comfort of homes. Student cards and enrolment forms are not necessary; all that’s needed is for students to tune into SABC2 every Monday to Thursday.

“Open Varsity offers lessons in arts, law, commerce, engineering and natural sciences faculties. Whether it’s physics, financial accounting, commercial law, physiology and constitutional law 100, our presenters bring the lecture hall to viewers where professors and lecturers with expertise provide lessons without a charge,” says Fani Matsebane, commissioning editor at SABC Education’s formal education unit.
